For example, continuous flow has been shown to cause damage to the aortic valve and to result in acquired von Willebrand syndrome. This latter condition can cause serious haemorrhage. The Haemaflow pump is a positive displacement pump so that, unlike centrifugal pumps, the pulsatility is not compromised when pumping blood through an oxygenator.
The design can be adapted for a range of applications including Extracorporeal Life Support (where patients with reduced lung function are supported by direct oxygenation of the blood), Cardiopulmonary Bypass (in which patients are fully supported during surgical procedures on lungs and heart),and Transplant Organ perfusion (in which organs for transplant are maintained in a healthy functioning state whilst they are tested for suitability and then transplanted). The compact design gives flexibility to place the pump at the most convenient position for patient and clinical staff. For example, if placed on the patient, it can minimize the length of tubing and facilitate mobility.
